SLUCare Adult Epilepsy Clinic

An epilepsy diagnosis can come at any age. The condition may be inherited or develop in response to a brain injury or malformation that disrupts normal electrical activity in the brain. Epilepsy is marked by recurrent seizures, although not all seizures are caused by epilepsy.

SLUCare epileptologists are neurologists who are specially trained to identify the causes of seizures and to help control epileptic seizures through medical management or surgery.

A Team Approach to Care

In the SLUCare Adult Epilepsy Clinic, we bring together the expertise of epileptologists, neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists, neuroradiologists, psychiatrists and social workers to support adult patients with recurrent seizures. It’s next-level care for patients who continue to struggle with seizures despite previous efforts at medical intervention.

The Adult Epilepsy Clinic Offers:

  • Evaluation of patients with recurrent seizures
  • Testing to pinpoint the source of seizures
  • Medical management of seizures using anti-epileptic drugs
  • Evaluation for epilepsy surgery, including resection, vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) and deep brain stimulation
  • Identification of non-epileptic seizures with referral to cognitive behavioral therapy, as needed
  • Assistance with social needs, such as filing for disability
  • Psychiatric support for patients with epilepsy-related anxiety or depression

Epilepsy affects patients differently. Some patients diagnosed with epilepsy in childhood may find their symptoms improve as they get older. But for others, whether diagnosed in childhood or adulthood, epilepsy may require lifelong medical intervention. Our team is here to help as long as needed to make living with epilepsy more manageable for you.
